Street-Legal Golf Cart Review: Top 10 FAQs about owning a Golf Cart in Southern California

What are the ‘Top 10 FAQs about owning a Golf Cart in Southern California?’ – we list them here.

Top 10 Frequently Asked Questions About Buying and Owning a Street-Legal Golf Cart in Southern California

If you live in San Diego, La Jolla, Carlsbad, Pacific Beach, Coronado Island, or anywhere in Southern California, a Street-Legal Golf Cart can be a convenient and practical way to get around your neighborhood, beachside communities, and city streets. Here are the top 10 most frequently asked questions (FAQs) about buying and owning a Street-Legal Golf Cart.

  1. What Makes a Golf Cart Street-Legal for Driving Around Town?

To be considered Street-Legal in California, a Golf Cart must meet specific safety and operational requirements. A Street-Legal Golf Cart, also known as a Low-Speed Vehicle (LSV), must have:

  1. Headlights, taillights, and brake lights
  2. Turn signals
  3. Rearview mirror and side mirrors
  4. Horn
  5. Windshield
  6. Seat belts for all passengers
  7. A speed capability of 20 to 25 miles per hour
  8. A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and registration with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)

Without these features, a standard Golf Cart cannot be driven on public roads unless it is in a designated Golf Cart-friendly community.

  1. Do I Have to Register My Golf Cart to Be Street-Legal?

Yes. In California, if your Golf Cart meets the Low-Speed Vehicle (LSV) classification, it must be registered with the California DMV to be driven on public roads. This means:

  1. A valid driver’s license is required to operate it.
  2. Insurance must be carried just like a regular vehicle.
  3. The cart must display a license plate.

If your Golf Cart does not meet LSV standards (for example, it has a top speed under 20 miles per hour and lacks required safety features), it can only be driven in private communities or on Golf Courses.

  1. How Fast Can a Street-Legal Golf Cart Go?

A Street-Legal Golf Cart (LSV) must be capable of reaching speeds of 20 to 25 miles per hour to be legally driven on roads with a posted speed limit of 35 miles per hour or lower.

Standard Golf Carts (non-street legal) typically have a top speed of 15 miles per hour and are not permitted on public roads unless modified to meet LSV standards.

  1. How Far Can I Drive a Street-Legal Golf Cart?

The range of a Street-Legal Golf Cart depends on the battery type:

  1. Lead-Acid Battery: 20 to 30 miles per charge
  2. Lithium-Ion Battery: 40 to 60 miles per charge

For those in San Diego, La Jolla, Carlsbad, or Pacific Beach, a lithium-powered Street-Legal Golf Cart can easily handle daily errands, beach trips, and local commutes.

  1. Where Can I Legally Drive a Street-Legal Golf Cart in Southern California?

In San Diego County and other parts of Southern California, you can legally drive a Street-Legal Golf Cart on roads where the speed limit is 35 miles per hour or lower. Some of the most popular golf-cart-friendly areas include:

  1. Coronado Island – Perfect for beachside transportation
  2. La Jolla Village – Ideal for local errands and short commutes
  3. Pacific Beach – Popular for coastal cruising
  4. Carlsbad Village – Known for its golf-cart-friendly streets
  5. Downtown San Diego and Seaport Village – LSV-friendly zones

Local regulations may vary, so it is always a good idea to check with city ordinances before driving in a new area.

  1. Basic Models: $8,000 to $10,000
  2. Mid-Range Models (with Lithium Batteries): $10,000 to $15,000
  3. Premium Models (Luxury Features, Touchscreens, Upgraded Motors): $15,000 to $20,000 or more

  1. Do Street-Legal Golf Carts Require Insurance?

Yes. In California, a Street-Legal Golf Cart must have liability insurance, similar to a car. Insurance coverage typically includes:

  1. Liability coverage (required by law)
  2. Collision and comprehensive coverage (optional but recommended)
  3. Uninsured motorist coverage (optional)

Insurance premiums generally range from $200 to $500 per year, depending on coverage levels and the insurer.

  1. What Are the Benefits of Owning a Street-Legal Golf Cart in San Diego?

  3. Eco-Friendly – Electric models reduce carbon emissions

  1. Standard 110V Outlet – Most Golf Carts can plug into a regular home outlet
  2. Upgraded Charging Stations – Faster charging with a 240V outlet

LSV Requirements

NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) issued a mandate that requires hybrids and electric vehicles travelling at less than 18.6 mph (30 km/h) to emit warning sounds that pedestrians must be able to hear over background noises- The regulation requires full compliance in all electric vehicles, including LSVs. Because of the quietness of electric vehicles and the possibility of collision with visually or audibly impaired pedestrians, the overall objective is to facilitate proximity awareness and minimize the chance of personal injury. In summary, an LSV (legally licensed to drive on streets up to 25 mph> must emit a sound when the forward or reverse switch is in the:

Forward position:

  • From 0 MPH to 18.6 mph.The sound is allowed to stop once the vehicle exceeds 18.6 mph.

Reverse position:
In order to comply with NHTSA rules, all LSV vehicles have a Pedestrian Alert sound generator installed.
